GRAND RAPIDS – When Emma Roedel reported a teammate on Michigan State University's track team had sexually assaulted her, she thought her coach would protect her.
Instead, assistant coach Yolanda Johnson told Roedel "no one would like her" if she pursued the sexual assault claim, according to a lawsuit Roedel and her attorney filed Wednesday in federal district court.
A few months later, Johnson forced Roedel to choose between switching from sprint to distance events, quitting the team or transferring to another school.
Roedel, a Fowlerville High School graduate, transferred to Grand Valley State University "so that my abuser could continue running on the sprint side.
