The Spartans break camp today and vote for their 2015 captains, and that's always an interesting look at how players perceive each other. It's often at least a little bit surprising, too -- such as when punter Aaron Bates was voted an MSU captain in 2010, or when Travis Jackson got the nod a year ago (joining obvious choices Shilique Calhoun and Kurtis Drummond). Jackson was clearly a well-liked guy, but it wasn't until he was voted captain that it became clear to folks outside the locker room how important he was in that locker room.
It was also a bit surprising last year that Connor Cook wasn't voted captain, coming off his Rose Bowl MVP performance as a sophomore.
