Former Spartan All-American Larry Fowler Passes Away at Age 83

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Former Michigan State All-American tackle Larry Fowler, who helped lead the Spartans to the 1953 Big Ten Championship and a victory in the 1954 Rose Bowl, died Friday, May 20. He was 83.

A three-year letterman (1951-53), Fowler was a first-team All-America selection at offensive tackle his senior year in 1953 by NBC-TV. He also played tackle on defense.

During MSU’s first season of Big Ten competition, Fowler and the Spartans went 5-1 in conference play to tie for the league title and defeated No. 5 UCLA in the 1954 Rose Bowl, 28-20, to finish 9-1 overall and No.
