Former MSU hockey coach Ron Mason dies at 76

Ron Mason, who guided the Michigan State hockey team to the 1986 national title, died Sunday night, the university confirmed. Mason was 76.

When Mason retired from coaching in 2002, he was college hockey’s winningest coach with 924 victories. Mason was 635-270-69 in 23 seasons with the Spartans. He also coached at Lake Superior State (1967-1973) and Bowling Green (1974-1979).

After coaching for the Spartans, Mason served as MSU’s athletic director from 2002-2008.
