Tom Yewcic, a member of Michigan State football’s 1953 Big Ten championship and Rose Bowl-winning team and the Spartans’ 1954 College World Series baseball team, has died. He was 88.
The New England Patriots, for whom Yewcic played and coached, released news of his death.
The 2003 inductee into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame was famous for his “Transcontinental Pass,” a touchdown throw from the halfback position to Al Dorow which helped the No. 1 Spartans defeat No. 7 Ohio State in 1951 as they earned a share of the national title. The native of Conemaugh, Pennsylvania, moved to quarterback for the next two seasons and became an All-American in 1952, leading MSU to another national championship that season.
