For six decades, Michigan State's trips out West have been cursed

EAST LANSING -- Michigan State has had its share of football glory out West: four Rose Bowl wins and a smattering of other West Coast bowl wins, including the Holiday Bowl in December over Washington State.

But games played in September, October and November have been a different story.

Following the its 16-13 Saturday night loss to Arizona State, Michigan State is now 0-13 in regular season games played west of the Rocky Mountains since 1962. The furthest west Michigan State has won since 1953 is a 1984 game at Colorado.

Michigan State's squandered chances on offense prove critical in loss at Arizona State

The streak is a strange one, cutting through the ups and downs of more than a half century of Spartans football:

1962: at Stanford, 16-13
1963: at Southern California, 13-10
1970: at Washington, 42-16
1972: at Southern California, 51-6
1974: at UCLA, 56-14
1978: at Southern California, 30-9
1980: at Oregon, 35-7
1986: at Arizona State, 20-17
1998: at Oregon, 48-14
2004: at Hawaii, 41-38
2008: at California, 38-31
2014: at Oregon, 46-27
2018: at Arizona State, 16-13

The losses have come to eight different programs, with the most coming at Southern California.
