East Lansing — Michigan State rarely makes things easy in its opener, and on Friday against Utah State, the 11th-ranked Spartans almost let this season’s get away.
But a fourth-quarter touchdown drive that ended with a 13-yard run by Connor Heyward followed by a two-point conversion pass from Brian Lewerke to Felton Davis gave Michigan State what it needed to record the 38-31 victory in front of 73,114 at Spartan Stadium.
