A draft plan to change federal guidelines surrounding campus sexual assault and harassment has been met with concern by some survivors and advocates as one of Michigan's largest universities continues to recover from a major sexual abuse scandal.
A draft proposal obtained by The New York Times suggests the U.S. Department of Education, led by West Michigan native Betsy DeVos, plans to codify new regulations for how sexual harassment and assault is defined under Title IX and how schools are obligated to respond. The report states rules could go into effect without Congressional action following a period for public comment.
