Coming off of a NCAA College Cup appearance in the 2018 season, the first for Michigan State since 1968, expectations were high for the Spartans in 2019. MSU finished 14-5-4 overall, and 4-2-2 in the Big Ten in 2018 with a final United Soccer Coaches poll ranking of No. 4, just behing fellow Big Ten teams Maryland (No. 1) and Indiana (No. 3). With a host of talent from the cup team returning, MSU was voted No. 7 in the preseason poll.
