Stanton is in charge of his own fate, which means the Marlins must wait, too

What began as a happy marriage between the Marlins and Giancarlo Stanton is turning into a messy divorce. Three years after signing the slugger to a record contract — a deal that was to make Stanton a “Marlin for life” — the Marlins are having trouble getting rid of him.

Stanton isn’t thrilled with the idea of accepting a trade to the San Francisco Giants or St. Louis Cardinals, teams that have reached trade agreements with the Marlins, according to published reports.

Instead, with his full no-trade rights that permit him to veto any deal, Stanton could be holding out for his preferred teams — the Dodgers, and perhaps even the Yankees — to work out a trade offer the Marlins would be willing to accept, The Athletic reported late Thursday.
