Miami signed veteran starter Jeremy Guthrie to a minor league deal Monday afternoon, according to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.
Guthrie, 37, opted out of his minor league contract with the Padres in early June.
The Marlins are known to be seeking starting pitching help behind Jose Fernandez, with Jarred Cosart and Justin Nicolino both pitching in Triple-A New Orleans. Miami is expected to pursue a trade for a starter in the coming weeks and was linked to Jake Odorizzi, Drew Pomeranz and Bud Norris last week.
While Guthrie might not be an upgrade over Nicolino or Cosart, or Paul Clemens, who has now made a pair of starts with the Marlins since being promoted, he could find himself in Miami’s rotation with a few productive outings.
