Starting pitcher Colin Rea left his first start with the Marlins as a result of an injury and eventually was shipped back to San Diego in exchange for prospect Luis Castillo. Major League Baseball punished the Padres GM soon thereafter, but the Marlins were prepared to void the trade completely, according to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.
A complete voiding of the initial trade, as the Marlins understood it, would have been complicated by the fact that Cashner already had pitched for them, allowing one earned run in six innings in a 5-4 victory over the Cardinals on July 31.
