Marlins reach settlements with 5 players, avoiding arbitration

The Marlins entered Friday with five arbitration-eligible players and took care of all their business. Adam Conley, J.T. Realmuto, Miguel Rojas, Dan Straily and José Ureña each agreed to one-year deals for the 2019 season.

There was a 1 p.m. ET deadline for MLB teams and players to exchange salary figures. Historically, the Marlins have treated it as a hard deadline for negotiations, too (“file-and-trial” approach). Unresolved cases go before an independent arbitration panel, who rules in favor of either the player or the team. They’ll avoid that awkwardness this year after taking three players—Realmuto, Straily and Justin Bour—to hearings in 2018.
