Miss Lou Lou Gherig was just trying to do her job. “Lou Lou,” the team dog for the Miami Marlins’ Class A affiliate Greensboro (North Carolina) Grasshoppers, is trained to retrieve player’s bats. On Sunday, showed off her talents a tad too early.
It began when Greensboro batter Jhonny Santos dropped his bat and prepared to head to first when he thought he drew a walk. The umpire, however, called the pitch a strike. So the at-bat wasn’t over.
“Lou Lou” had other plans, trotting out to home plate to retrieve the bat from Santos before retreating shortly afterward.
