Derek Jeter may get an assist from Miami-Dade in ridding Marlins Park of its kitschy home run sculpture, which the new team owner reportedly detests.
Mayor Carlos Gimenez, also a critic of the sculpture, arrived at Marlins Park Tuesday with the top aide who supervises the county arts program that purchased the $2.5 million piece for the stadium’s 2012 opening. It was commissioned before Gimenez became mayor in 2011, and a source familiar with Tuesday’s agenda said the seven-story sculpture would be discussed.
Formally titled “Homer,” the sculpture whirs with moving dolphins and splashing fountains when the Marlins hit a home run inside the county-owned stadium.
