The Miami Marlins' season has been a disappointing one on many levels, including former closer Steve Cishek's fall from one of the game's most reliable back-end bullpen specials to, now, the minor leagues.
Following the Marlins' 5-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Monday, the team made the decision to option Cishek to Double-A Jacksonville. Cishek, 1-5 with a 6.98 ERA in 19 appearances, lost the closer's job two weeks back.
"We want to take him out of the spotlight of the major leagues and let him work on some mechanical things," manager Dan Jennings said, via an Associated Press report.
Cishek had been looking for a contract extension during the offseason, but now his focus turns to getting his game back in order in hopes of returning in a prominent bullpen role somewhere down the road.
