The Miami Marlins have reached into their farm system for right-handed pitching help, promoting Vin Mazzaro and Andre Rienzo from Triple-A New Orleans.
However, the bigger story may be the players the Marlins chose not to bring up.
Here's Walter Villa of the Miami Herald with the report:
The moves were made necessary when the Marlins announced Friday night that they were placing two of their starting pitchers — Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) and Mat Latos (left knee) — on the 15-day disabled list.
Tom Koehler will start for the Marlins on Sunday as the team concludes its 10-game homestand. David Phelps will start on Monday as the Marlins start a six-game road trip with a series against Pittsburgh.
The first day the Marlins would need another starter beyond the three currently in the rotation —Dan Haren, Koehler and Phelps — would be Tuesday.
That’s when the Marlins could call up top prospects Justin Nicolino and Jose Urena. Urena is more likely because he is more rested.
(Manager Dan) Jennings didn’t mention those two 23-year-olds by name, but he didn’t have to.
“There are a couple of guys down there that everybody knows,” Jennings said. “Those guys will be discussed. It will be an interesting discussion as to what is best for us right now.”
