CORAL GABLES — Throughout the Miami Hurricanes’ first practice of preseason camp Friday night, starting quarterback D’Eriq King was hoping one specific play call would be made during the team’s 11-on-11 drills.
“I’m begging them to give me a pull-read,” said King, who’s seven months removed from surgery to repair the ACL he tore in his right knee during Miami’s loss to Oklahoma State in the 2020 Cheez-It Bowl game. “I wanted to run the ball so bad so I could just feel it out.”
So when a zone-read play was called in the closing minutes of Friday’s practice, King showcased the mobility people have grown accustomed to seeing from the 23-year-old signal caller over the course of his career, with King cutting off his right leg twice and juking defenders en route to scoring a touchdown that closed out practice.
