As news broke Tuesday about a largescale FBI probe that resulted in federal charges of fraud and corruption against assistant basketball coaches across the country, court documents indicate the University of Miami and its men’s basketball program could be involved.
According to a Department of Justice complaint filed against Jim Gatto, an executive at Adidas, an assistant coach from “University 7” was involved in trying to funnel approximately $150,000 to an unnamed high school basketball player expected to graduate in 2018. The expectation was that the money would secure the player’s verbal commitment to play at the unnamed university and later, assure he would sign a contract with “Company 1” once he entered a professional league.
