CORAL GABLES — The first indication something might be wrong came not on the field or in the weight room, but on day off last spring when David Thompson opted to hop on his bike for some exercise.
His ride felt routine, like countless others, until the Hurricanes' infielder realized he could no longer feel the handlebars underneath his hands. Initially, Thompson figured the numbness was a minor inconvenience, something that would go away. He didn't think it wouldn't impact his season, a season he thought might be turning around after he played well during a three-game series at Georgia Tech.
