Sloppiness costly as Virginia holds off UM 73-68 in ACC semifinals

WASHINGTON --- It’s difficult enough for any team to handle Virginia’s almost unwavering commitment to defense.

Catching the Cavaliers on a night when their offense is near peak efficiency even for a half makes matters nearly impossible.

It was that potent combination third-seeded Miami caught in the ACC tournament semifinals Friday night. Second-seeded Virginia started strong in both halves and ultimately held on for a 73-68 triumph in the third meeting between the two teams.

Ja’Quan Newton scored 19 points and Sheldon McClellan added 15 for the Hurricanes (25-7), who will learn their NCAA tournament destination Sunday evening.
