CORAL GABLES — Norchad Omier’s first game as a Hurricane started a bit slow. He brought in 10 first-half rebounds but had only one point.

“I really was not nervous,” Omier said. “But a new atmosphere, I want to do everything right so I put a little pressure on myself and I really didn’t have to do that.”

Miami coach Jim Larrañaga spoke to the forward, who transferred from Arkansas State in the offseason, and told him to just “have fun.” It was good advice.

Omier scored 10 second-half points and brought in five more rebounds to help lead the Hurricanes to a season-opening 67-54 win over Lafayette at the Watsco Center on Monday night.
