New Florida name, image, likeness bill, poised to become law, could drastically affect state athletic programs

A Broward state representative took the lead in altering Florida’s name, image and likeness law, and it could have drastic effects on how Miami and other Florida universities’ athletic programs handle their players’ NIL deals.

The bill, HB 7B, passed the Florida House of Representatives and Senate without a single vote opposing it, and now it only needs to be signed by Governor Ron DeSantis before becoming state law.

The new bill strikes much of the state’s prior NIL statute, which permitted college athletes in Florida to receive NIL compensation but forbade university officials from getting involved.
