Miami Hurricanes junior shortstop Freddy Zamora was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers at pick No. 53 in the second round of the MLB draft on Thursday.
Zamora was drafted despite suffering a knee injury that cost him the 2020 college baseball season, one that all players lost a month later due to the coronavirus pandemic.
UM baseball coach Gino DiMare, ahead of the draft, felt there would be a demand for the slick-fielding, right-handed-hitting Zamora regardless of the injury.
“The shortstop position is probably the hardest position to find. There’s not a lot of good shortstops out there,” DiMare, who felt Zamora could’ve been a first-round choice before the injury, told the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
