The University of Miami defensive end who is as stellar off the field as he is on it has been added to the numerous preseason accolades afforded to several of his teammates.
Fifth-year senior Demetrius Jackson, who missed most of spring football while recuperating from season-ending, right-knee surgery in November to repair a torn meniscus, was named Thursday as a candidate for the Wuerffel Trophy.
The trophy is recognized as college football’s top award for community service, and is presented annually to the “FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.’’
Jackson, 6-3 and back down to about 260 pounds, was the Miami Herald’s 2014 Miami-Dade Male Athlete of the Year out of Miami Booker T.
