The Miami football team has had strong competition for the two opening safety spots from spring through training camp. Sophomore Gurvan Hall and junior Amari Carter have appeared to emerge as first-team at the position. That apparently was enough for junior Derrick Smith to announce his entry into the transfer portal.
Smith was moved back to safety this spring after backing up senior Romeo Finley at striker in 2018. Finley returns this season and is being backed up by sophomore Gilbert Frierson who was converted from cornerback this spring. Smith’s numbers went slightly down from freshman to sophomore year after the move to striker.
