After the Hurricanes had wrapped up their first scrimmage of the spring — held this past Saturday at Miami’s Christopher Columbus High School — coach Manny Diaz was pleased with some of what he had seen.
Several Hurricanes made big plays, including receiver Mark Pope, who had a confidence-building touchdown catch. Early enrollee Zion Nelson had held his own on the offensive line. Gilbert Frierson, who moved from cornerback to striker, was starting to shine at his new position. And defensive end Greg Rousseau, a standout last spring who missed of the regular season after hurting his ankle early in the year, no longer looked like a player coming off an injury.
