Please excuse this brief interruption to football season, but there’s a story in Coral Gables worth keeping a (hurricane) eye on.
University of Miami Volleyball has quietly built itself into one of the most competitive programs in the entire athletic department. Head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara joined the program in 2013 and has guided the Hurricanes to an NCAA Tournament berth in 7 out of 10 seasons. By comparison, Katie Meier’s Women’s Basketball team also made the tournament 7 times, while Jim Larrañaga’s Men’s Basketball team made the tournament 6 times during the same stretch.
But Hurricanes volleyball always stumbled early in the tournament, never making it out of the second round to the Sweet Sixteen.
