Hurricanes cornerback Malik Curtis has stymied enough plays in practice that quarterbacks coach Frank Ponce has given him a new nickname.
“Coach Ponce calls him Weezy,” quarterback Tyler Van Dyke said, “and he was like, ‘Better not throw to Weezy anymore.’”
The sophomore cornerback barely saw the field on defense in his first season with the Hurricanes, but as he prepares for his sophomore campaign, he appears poised to play a much bigger role.
“Curtis has blossomed, really blossomed,” defensive coordinator Kevin Steele said. “And the guy can run. He can run. He’s had some really big plays this fall camp.
