A 15-2 run just after halftime flipped a seven-point Miami deficit into a six-point lead. After the Hokies tied the game later in the second half a 10-1 Miami run gave them a nine-point lead.
Virginia Tech fought back and tied the game with 2:45 remaining in the game. Virginia Tech took a brief lead before Lonnie Walker tied with under a minute left and Lykes won it with his free throw. Walker’s game-tying jumper was Miami’s first field goal in nearly seven and a half minutes.
