Throughout training camp, the Hurricanes have run four talented backs — Gus Edwards, Joe Yearby, Mark Walton, and Trayone Gray — with their first unit in the hopes of finding a starter to take that first carry in Miami's season opener against Bethune-Cookman.
With that game now less than a week away, the Hurricanes find themselves having to adjust after losing Edwards, the veteran of the running backs group, to a season-ending foot injury.
Edwards, a power back out of Staten Island, N.Y., was injured in Miami's final scrimmage of camp on Aug. 22. He missed a pair of practices last week and Hurricanes coach Al Golden initially said Edwards was sidelined with a bruise on his left foot.
