Shane Battier, a 6'8" small forward from Birmingham, MI, was born on September 9th, 1978. He made the 1997 McDonald's All American Team while attending Detroit Country Day School. He then joined the Duke Blue Devils for four seasons. As a senior, he scored 20 points with 7.3 rebounds per contest. The Memphis Grizzlies selected him in the first round of the 2001 draft with the sixth overall pick.
Battier played five seasons (396 games) with the Grizzlies for his first iteration with the team. He averaged 10.5 points with 4.8 rebounds per game.
