When Joe Johnson was first released by the Brooklyn Nets, it was expected that the Cleveland Cavaliers would land the shooting guard. However, that does not appear to be the case. Instead, the Miami Heat will sign Johnson.

The Heat are in need of guard help and Johnson can provide just that. The Heat are without Beno Udrih and Tyler Johnson at the moment. The addition of Johnson will also help the Heat's playoff chances.
Miami already has a roster spot open, so it won't need to cut anyone to make space for Johnson after he clears waivers.
Johnson is 34 years old and likely doesn't have many years left in the NBA. Johnson is averaging just 11.8 points per game, his lowest mark since the 2002-03 season. While he's not the player he once was, Johnson can still contribute as a shooting guard and is hitting 37 percent of his 3-pointers this year. He'll likely take the veteran minimum with the Heat.
