Olynyk was a restricted free agent, but the Boston Celtics renounced those rights in order to free up cap space to help sign Gordon Hayward.
Miami has a need for a stretch big man after officially parting with Chris Bosh this offseason, and Olynyk fills that need while being able to play either power forward or center.
The Heat were saving cap space for their own pursuit of Hayward, but after he chose the Celtics, Miami used that space to sign Dion Waiters to a long-term extension and now to grab Olynyk.
The 7-foot, 238-pounder averaged 9.0 points and 4.8 rebounds in 20.5 minutes per game for Boston this past season.
