Miami Heat players did not hesitate to offer their heartfelt support to the first active NBA player who went out and proud, Jason Collins. Even for Lebron James, the step that Collins made to reveal his true sexuality has been very noble.
It was actually for Sports Illustrated that the 34-year-old NBA center simply stated this powerful and courageous piece: “I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay.”
The news spread like wildfire especially across the Internet and even reaching the office of US President Barack Obama. The president highlighted in a particular news conference that gays and lesbians alike deserve all the right to be included and recognized in the American family.
Other Miami Heat players showed their support as well through their own words starting off with Chris Andersen calling Collins’ revelation as one “historical moment.” Andersen added that such a move may surely bring on new challenges especially to his career but for as long as Collins feel he has done the right thing, then they consider their colleague as having chosen the right path.
Collins just finished the season with the Washington Wizards but is now a free agent. He has played for a total of six teams in the duration of his career which lasted for 12 long years. Commissioner David Stern that it is possible to find Collins out of the succeeding NBA season but he assures everyone that this is not because of his announcement of being gay.
On this note, Miami Heat’s swingman Mike Miller who had experience playing with Collins for the Memphis team said that to find work would surely not be a problem for his ex teammate.
