The Miami Heat finished in the bottom third of the NBA this season, putting them in prime position to bring in a young, talented player. However, drafting the wrong player could add sent Miami into a full-fledged rebuilding process. Here are players they need to avoid in the draft:
Kelly Oubre – 6’6″, 205 lbs, SF – Fr., Kansas
Stats: 9.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg
Oubre rarely saw the court during the first part of his lone college season, but finally showed why he was one of the highest rated recruits in the country once he starting getting some playing time. He has good size and elite athleticism, yet his lack of focus, consistency, and offensive skill have him projected to go in the last half of the lottery. Oubre's potential is off the charts, but the time he needs time to develop and questions about his work ethic should drive the Heat away.
Kevon Looney – 6’9″, 220 lbs, SF/PF – Fr., UCLA
Stats: 11.6 ppg, 9.2 rpg
Looney is your classic tweener - many think he's too skinny to play power forward in the NBA, but he isn't athletic enough to play small forward. He had excellent production in college, but his lack of a true position means he may only turn into a bench player in the NBA.
Mario Hezonja – 6’8″, 200 lbs, SG/SF – Barcelona
Stats: 3.8 ppg, 1.6 rpg
Hezonja looks like he could become a great player, but still needs time to develop into his 6’8″ frame. That being said, he is a good shooter and has the length to become an elite defender, but it will take a few years for him to reach his full potential – and Miami won’t wait around for that.
