Why the Miami Dolphins named a long snapper captain

DAVIE — When the Miami Dolphins lost safety Reshad Jones for the season with a shoulder injury, the team had a vacancy at captain.

First-year coach Adam Gase didn’t flinch in naming Jones’ replacement — long-snapper John Denney.

“It’s never easy to replace a guy like Reshad, especially with what he has done since I’ve been here,” Gase said. “When you get to a place, you always do as much research on everybody as possible, and everybody told me, ‘(John Denney) doesn’t kind of say a whole bunch. He’s a really good player, but he’s quiet, and he does what he needs to do and leads by example.
