Perkins: Dolphins can lose key players, key is upgrading with replacements

Comment: “He prefers to be called Mr. Wake,” defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said with a smile.

Rumors are swirling that the Dolphins could agree to contract terms with defensive end Mario Williams sometime soon, possibly even today.

For the sake of the pass rush, here’s hoping that wouldn’t mean defensive end Cam Wake is departing. It already appears there could be a large exodus of years-long talent leaving the Dolphins this offseason.

Consider this: In the span of two offseasons the Dolphins could lose a collection of talent, much of it homegrown, that includes Wake, cornerback Brent Grimes, tight end Charles Clay, defensive ends Olivier Vernon and Derrick Shelby, running back Lamar Miller and wide receiver Rishard Matthews.
