In 2013, Bullygate happened.
Without going into too much detail over a particularly painful incident that most Miami Dolphins fans know all too well, Jonathan Martin quit the team in mid-season and accused several Dolphins players, notably Richie Incognito, of bullying him and using racial slurs. The scandal brought a media spotlight of national attention to the team, and ultimately labelled not just the Dolphins locker room, but every NFL locker room as an intolerant workplace.
In the immediate aftermath of BullyGate, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross flew to his hometown of Detroit, Michigan, and met with the governor and other city officials to discuss racism and discrimination, two notable problems that were at the core of Detroit’s poverty and economic problems.
