HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -- Miami Dolphins Hall of Fame coach Don Shula and players from the historic 1972 championship team often celebrate when every team fails to go undefeated. But this year is different for Shula.
Speaking at the Dolphins' Fifty Seasons Gala, Shula said he is hoping the Carolina Panthers (12-0) become the second team in NFL history to go undefeated and win a championship. Miami went 17-0 and won a title in 1972 -- when the regular season was 14 games -- and the record has stood for 43 years.
The accomplishment is a major part of Shula’s legacy.
