The Miami Dolphins fell out of the playoff race with a disappointing end to the 2014 season, but the time is now to turn the page and get ready for a whole new season of ups and downs on South Beach. Here are 3 things we've learned about the Dolphins so far in training camp:
Lamar Miller is becoming THE guy in the backfield
Miller rushed for over five yards per carry in 2014, posting his first 1,000-yard rushing season (1,099) while crossing the goal line eight times on the ground. Add in his work as a developing safety valve for Ryan Tannehill in the passing game (38 receptions, 275 yards, 1 TD in 2014), and Miami has a fantasy football breakout candidate in its midst. It looks like he's taken the next step in training camp, but we have to see it in a game before fully believing in him.
Ndamukong Suh has been as good as advertised
Miami signed Suh to the largest contract given to a defensive player in league history, hoping to form one of the best defenses in the NFL. The Dolphins ranked in the top 13 in the league in both yards and points allowed last season, and ranked 10th against the run. Suh figures to give Miami a major boost in all of those categories - but there will be a lot of pressure on him to live up to his contract.
He has done that so far in camp, according to James Walker of ESPN:
"Miami's $114 million investment entered training camp in tremendous shape and has been difficult to block in team and one-on-one drills. Suh was most dominant Saturday in Miami's first day in full pads. Although Suh also must get ready for the regular season, the Dolphins' coaching staff may want to taper Suh back a bit so the interior offensive line can gain some confidence."
Jamar Taylor looks like a starting cornerback
Taylor finally looks like he has started to figure it out in his third season despite increased competition for the second starting cornerback job.
Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that Taylor was the "front-runner" for the job coming into camp, but has only solidified himself in the role. His biggest problem has been his consistency, but Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald has repeatedly noted Taylor's "rock solid" performances at practice. If he can keep that up in the regular season, Taylor will be a breakout star next to Brent Grimes.
