NFL free agency is well under way and the Miami Dolphins have been one of the more active teams in the league. They made several moves in the first week and aren't done yet, and are also preparing for the upcoming NFL Draft. Here are the latest Dolphins news and rumors you need to know.
Miami's interest in Darrelle Revis
The Dolphins are still looking to upgrade their secondary, and with Darrelle Revis still available, could Miami look into signing him? James Parks of 247sports doesn't think so.
Head coach Adam Gase candidly said the unit “will take whatever help they can get right now,” when speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine, noting that getting depth in their pass defense would be a wise investment in a league devoted more to the pass than ever.
Revis comes with positives and negatives. Mostly, especially last season, the latter.
It’s easy to decry Revis as a washed-up has-been, a league all-timer fallen on seriously hard times, and his play last season would certainly justify that sentiment. But it’s also worth noting that in the year prior, Revis surrendered the NFL’s lowest completion rate as a the leading contributor on one of the league’s stingiest pass defenses.
Then there’s the financial factor. The Jets handed him $17 million last season and Spotrac appraises Revis’ current value at around $6 million annually. That could be a number the Dolphins are willing to pay — but only for one year, likely nothing more. Would Revis accept a one year deal? It would seem not.
Despite Miami’s self-professed need for secondary help, the odds are against the Dolphins looking to Darrelle Revis to provide it.
Revis just finished his 10th career NFL season and recorded 53 tackles, one interception and five pass breakups last season.
Dolphins will not keep Dion Jordan
One big question surrounding the Dolphins this offseason has been about the potential return of former first-round pick Dion Jordan, but Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald said that the team is going to part ways with Jordan.
He is not going to be on the Dolphins when they begin the 2017 regular season. Multiple people are telling me that while the former first-round pick remains on the roster, he is not in the plans.
So Jordan, given a fresh start with a new Dolphins staff and administration, wasn’t the guy on the field everyone hoped.
That wasn’t all. I’ve been told by two people now that Jordan had some sort of “issue” that did not involve football. No one is comfortable going beyond that.
It is not fair to assume the worst. But when a player has been suspended multiple times and hasn’t played a game for a couple of years, and his physique wasn’t exactly a living, breathing statue of David when he returned to the team, any issue -- small as it might be -- is a significant setback.
So Dion Jordan is not in the Dolphins’ longterm plans.
The No. 3 pick in the 2013 draft has missed each of the last two seasons due to multiple drug suspensions.
Julius Thomas says he is 100 percent healthy
Perhaps the biggest move the Dolphins made this season was acquiring tight end Julius Thomas from the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the oft-injured tight end said that he doesn't have any lingering ailments.
“I don’t really have any handicaps, anything that will hold me back,” Thomas said, via the Miami Herald. “… I feel really good. I know that I’ll be able to play at the highest level I’ve played in my career.”
Thomas dealt with back, ankle and a finger injury during his time with the Jaguars. He caught 30 passes for 281 yards and four touchdowns in nine games last season.
