We're already a few weeks into NFL Free Agency, and while the Miami Dolphins have already been fairly active, they're still looking to make some more moves. With that in mind, here are all of the interesting rumors and news tidbits on the Dolphins.
Dolphins sign Whalen
Miami announced they have signed backup wide receiver Griff Whalen, adding depth after losing Greg Jennings and Rishard Matthews. The terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed.
Whalen caught 19 passes for 205 yards and one touchdown last season for the Indianapolis Colts.
Miami interested in Ezekiel Elliott?
The Dolphins haven't been shy about trying to add a running back after losing Lamar Miller to the Texans, but ultimately missed out on C.J. Anderson and Chris Johnson. That has caused them to look to the draft, where Bleacher Report's Jason Cole says the Dolphins "may think strongly" about drafting Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott with the No. 13 overall pick. ESPN details the reasons why Elliott would be a good fit in Miami:
New head coach Adam Gase wants a runner who thrives in stretch plays with the ability to cut back against the grain.
With his all-around skill set, Elliott would certainly fit the bill, but that doesn't mean taking a running back early is necessarily the best idea. Many unknown prospects have emerged to thrive in zone-based, stretch schemes over the years, from late-round picks to undrafted free agents. As good as Elliott is, the Dolphins might be better served waiting until later to find a back and filling a different hole in Round 1.
