The Miami Dolphins didn't make the front office move that most fans wanted to see...but even though HC Joe Philbin is still around, the Dolphins have shaken things up. Mike Tannenbaum, formerly GM of the New York Jets, will take over as Dolphins Executive VP of Football Operations, and he'll officially get started in February.
Tannenbaum worked as a sports agent since leaving the Jets, recently helping broker the deal between rookie head coach Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors. While the Dolphins already have a GM in Dennis Hickey, Hickey will now report to Tannenbaum, who will effectively be at the top of Miami's front office food chain. Interestingly, HC Joe Philbin will not report to Tannenbaum, and word on the street is he'll report directly to owner Stephen Ross next year.
The Jets were 57-55 with Tannenbaum as GM, and he found much better success building a defense than building an offense. Tannenbaum will likely be less trigger-happy when trading draft picks in Miami - his propensity to deal picks for veterans left the Jets with major holes in their depth chart in his final season, when the Jets finished 6-10.
