The Miami Dolphins know they have one of the best young centers in the NFL in Mike Pouncey, and they aren't interested in losing him when his current contract expires at the end of the 2015 season.
Pouncey signed a 4-year, $9.26 million contract in 2011, and Pouncey's rapid improvement made it one of the NFL's best bargains by the time the 2014 season rolled around. Now that his deal has just one season left to run, the team plans to work with Pouncey to agree on a contract extension that should keep him a Dolphin for the forseeable future.
Miami Herald columnist Armando Salguero spoke to Dolphins Executive VP of Football Operations Mike Tannenbaum over the weekend, and got the distinct impression the Dolphins are going to reach a deal on an extension this offseason. This vibes with what we'd heard coming out of Miami, and shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone.
While Pouncey's play in 2014 didn't always meet his usual standard, that was largely because he was being played out of position - injuries and the Richie Incognito/Jonathan Martin fiasco left the Dolphins dangerously thin on the offensive line, and Pouncey found himself forced into action as a right guard. The Dolphins will be losing center Samson Satele to free agency this summer, and it's widely expected that Pouncey will move back to his natural position in 2015.
