Joe Philbin's status as Miami Dolphins head coach is still up in the air, with several NFL sources pointing to the team parting ways with him after three years of service.
If the Dolphins do fire Philbin, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the Dolphins will likely have interest in Auburn Tigers head coach Gus Malzahn as a potential replacement:
.@RapSheet on Gus Malzahn: "I would expect the Dolphins to have interest in him if they part ways with Joe Philbin."
— NFL Media PR (@InsideNFLMedia) December 21, 2014
Malzahn led Auburn to the 2013 BCS National Championship Game, following that up with an 8-4 campaign and an Outback Bowl berth in 2014. His stock is currently quite high as a potential college-to-NFL convert, and he may look to cash in on that this offseason.
If that's indeed the case and the Dolphins' reported dalliance with San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh doesn't bear fruit, Malzahn will likely find himself as a desired target in the eyes of Miami owner Stephen Ross and the rest of the franchise's front office.
