The Miami Dolphins struggled last season, fired their head coach mid-way through the year and now hold the No. 13 overall pick in the NFL Draft after making a trade with the Eagles. A return to the playoffs soon could happen under new head coach Adam Gase, but the Dolphins must fill a few needs. Drafting a bust could cause them to take a step back in 2016. Here are three players the Dolphins need to avoid in the first round:
3) Jack Conklin, OT, Michigan State Spartans
Conklin is expected to be a mid-to-late first-round pick in almost every mock draft, but he's also someone who will need several years to adjust to the NFL. He has a lot of strength and toughness, but he wasn't quick enough to adequately block speed rushers in college - meaning he'll be eaten alive by those guys at the next level. He'll likely be moved from left tackle to right tackle in the NFL, though he'll likely still just be a backup or rotation guy until he improves on his footwork and technique with his lower body.
2) Leonard Floyd, DE/OLB, Georgia Bulldogs
Floyd is projected to be a mid first-round pick because of his ability to rush the passer, but he really struggles when he's asked to do anything else. He lacks good instincts, is far too stiff in coverage, and is really bad at reading opposing offenses. As a result, he's very hesitant when attacking a ball-carrier and often overruns plays. He's someone who could slip several spots when the draft rolls around.
1) Mackensie Alexander, CB, Clemson Tigers
Corner is another need for the Dolphins, but Alexander is not worth the No. 13 pick. With Vernon Hargreaves also in the class likely to be available when they pick, the Dolphins shouldn't have to take Alexander so early. The young corner has played just two seasons, which is a bit worrisome. While Alexander should develop into a solid pro, there are better options at CB for the Dolphins this year.
