The Miami Dolphins struggled last season, fired their head coach mid-way through the year and now hold the No. 8 overall pick in the NFL Draft. A return to the playoffs soon could happen under new head coach Adam Gase, but the Dolphins must fill a few needs. Drafting a bust could cause them to take a step back in 2016. Here are three players the Dolphins need to avoid in the first round:
3. Ezekiel Elliott, RB, Ohio State Buckeyes
This isn't a knock on Elliott's ability, but rather what the Dolphins need right now. Lamar Miller is a free agent and the team might let him walk. Elliott is going to be a very good running back, but the Dolphins shouldn't take him No. 8 overall. He isn't a big enough upgrade over Miller (or even Jay Ajayi) to justify spending the first rounder on Elliott. The Dolphins must use the pick on another area of need.
2. Jack Conklin, OT, Michigan State Spartans
Conklin is projected to be a mid first-round pick in almost every mock draft, but the Dolphins can't take him with their first round pick. The only tackles worth drafting that high are Notre Dame's Ronnie Stanley and Ole Miss' Laremy Tunsil. Miami needs offensive line help, but reaching for Conklin (or OSU's Taylor Decker) isn't the answer. Plus, Conklin might not even be ready to contribute right away.
1. Mackensie Alexander, CB, Clemson Tigers
Corner is another need for the Dolphins, but Alexander is not worth the No. 8 pick. With Jalen Ramsey and Vernon Hargreaves also in the class, the Dolphins shouldn't have to take Alexander so early. The young corner has played just two seasons, which is a bit worrisome. While Alexander should develop into a solid pro, there are better options at CB for the Dolphins this year.
