Tigers Fall 5-3 to Tulane Despite Gartman’s Excellent Outing

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – RHP Landon Gartman (ND) provided the Memphis Tigers (12-12, 0-3) their second consecutive quality start, but for the second straight day, it wasn't enough in a loss to the Tulane Green Wave (19-9-1, 3-0), 5-3 Sunday afternoon. Gartman allowed three runs on six hits and struck out nine over seven+ innings but departed after consecutive walks to open the eighth inning.

Memphis: 3, Tulane: 5
WP: Michael Massey (2-0)
LP: Jacob Gilmore (0-2)
SV: Zach DeVito (7)

How it happened:

  • Gartman faced just two over the minimum through five innings and struck out nine over that stretch
  • Memphis got four consecutive singles to open the bottom of the second against Massey, as 1B Chris Swanberg put Memphis on top 1-0 and an RBI groundout by LF Ian Bibiloni gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead
  • The Tigers added a run on an RBI groundout by DH Jacob Compton in the third, but sent just one over the minimum to the plate over the game's final six innings
  • Tulane started the sixth inning with four straight singles, which plated a run, but Gartman retired the next three hitters to strand the bases loaded and keep Memphis in front 3-1
  • DH Brady Marget and C Bennett Lee drew consecutive walks to start the eighth before the Tigers turned to Gilmore
  • The Memphis lefty retired LF Simon Baumgardt but gave up a go-ahead three-run home run to 2B Chase Engelhard, which put Tulane in front 4-3
  • The Green Wave added an insurance run in the ninth on a solo home run by RF Ethan Groff, while DeVito picked up the save for the second straight game, as he set down Memphis in order in the bottom of the inning to secure Tulane's 5-3 win

Notables:

  • Swanberg's RBI single in the second inning extended his hit streak to 10 games and his on-base streak to 14 games
  • With a second inning single, Compton has tallied a hit in four straight games and has reached base in 19 straight, the longest on-base streak of the season for the Tigers
  • Gartman recorded his third quality start in his last four outings
