WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Despite a slow start, Memphis men's tennis senior Ryan Peniston turned in a straight-set victory to open the NCAA singles tournament on Wednesday morning at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
No. 36 Peniston defeated No. 55 Carlos Divar of Georgia Tech, 6-2, 6-2. The Great Wakering, Great Britain native will face fellow American Athletic Conference senior, No. 15 Constantin Schmitz in the second round on Thursday with the first serve time to be announced later on Wednesday.
Trailing 0-2 early in the first frame against Divar, Peniston earned a break to even the set at 2-2.
